Full House 3

The episode of Full House that I managed to catch this week was about Danny becoming the bachelor of the month. Danny is constantly going on dates with women who asked him out only because of his new title. Danny finally lands a date with his talk show host, the one he really wanted to date.

During all of this, Michelle has been getting upset that her Father is never home to put her to bed or spend anytime with her. Her two sisters have been taking the role of Danny in her life. Michelle misses her Dad and will do anything to spend more time with him.

Danny left to go on a date with the co-host of Wake Up San Francisco, and Michelle and her friend climbed into the back seat of the car. When they arrived at the restaurant, Michelle and her friend waited a few minutes and then entered. Michelle spotted her Dad and started waving. Danny's date told him that there was a young woman waving and him and he replied egotistically that there are always women waving at him.

When he realizes that it's his daughter, he runs over to her and asks her why she is there. She told him that she misses him too much when he is always gone on dates. This shows how important relationships between fathers and daughters are. Michelle could not stand being away from her father, her only parent.

Full House Week 2

Full House again, I guess this is going to be my show of choice. There is not much time in my schedule to watch t.v. between being a full time student and working two jobs.
Today's episode was about father daughter relationships, just like the last episode and every other episode of Full House.
The episode started with DJ and Kimmy running in to the Tanner's house. Danny was standing in the kitchen and overheard DJ ask Kimmy what everyone was saying behind her back. Kimmy is hesitant to tell her and makes up a million excuses of what she needs to do instead of talking to DJ. Danny asks DJ if everything is okay and if he can help her with anything, and she said he could help her by leaving her alone.
Kimmy tells her that the mega crisis that is going around was started by Todd Mitchell, a boy at school. He is telling everyone that DJ is the worst kisser in the whole entire school. Danny comes in the room again and tells DJ that he is always there for her. Danny leaves the room after being rejected by his daughter yet again. DJ asks more about the crisis and Kimmy tells her that everyone knows about it, including their algebra teacher.
Kimmy and DJ leave the Tanner's house to go next door to Kimmy's house. Danny goes into DJ's room and finds the card that DJ was given that said sorry about your mega crisis from a girl at school.
Dj comes home and again is asked by her father if everything is okay. She responds that she is fine and didn't want to talk. Danny suggests that they go bowling. During bowling Kimmy arrives and tells DJ that they need to go to the mall to confront Todd Mitchell. When DJ gets home Danny tells her that he went snooping in her room and found the card. DJ is mad but explains everything when she realizes that her Dad is only there to help, not just to invade her privacy.

BROUGHT TO YOU B(U)Y

In response to the analysis of the Calvin Klein ads, I think that people are thinking way to far into the whole child exploitation idea. I don't think that Calvin Klein intended on the ad to be perceived as childhood pornography. I think he, like most other advertisers, was using the idea that sex and sex appeal sells. Almost all clothing advertisements use some sort of sex appeal. I think that by people protesting Calvin Klein because of his ad, he received more publication and free advertisement. All though many people wouldn't buy the products, everyone still remembers the name Calvin Klein and the ads that Calvin Klein published.

I also think that the ads that say they have a medical reason why you should buy their product are stupid. I don't know about anyone else, but when an ad tells me that I will be less likely to get cancer if I use some product, I usually won't be anymore influenced to buy them. You can catch cancer by breathing in the air or by being born into a family that has members with cancer. I don't understand why almost every food product on the market reduces your chance of cancer and millions of people get cancer every year. If all I had to do was eat a bowl of Kellogs All Bran cereal everyday to prevent me from getting cancer, I would do it. I think almost anyone would. I also think that any advertisement that says four out of five doctors chose thier product are very misleading. I'm sure that most people who buy the products in those ads expect that the doctors would be real doctors in that field. Most times the doctor will be either a student or a doctor in an unrelated field. I personally think that advertisements that don't tell the whole truth are far worse than a girl and a guy laying together half naked, even if they are only fourteen.

Full House

This week I watched an old rerun episode of Full House, not necessarily my show of choice, but hey it's on every hour. This episode was about DJ trying to arrange a fund raiser to raise money for her school to buy a new computer to publish their newspaper. DJ is able to hold the fund raiser at The Smash Club, her Uncle Jesse's night club. Her Uncle Joey is the comedy act and her Uncle Jesse's band plays during the fundraiser. Danny, DJ's father, gets upset that he is left out of all the plans. He decides that he is going to surprise DJ and sing a song with the band. While he is rehearsing "My Generation" by The Who's, DJ comes home and sees him. Danny is dressed in an all leather suit and jumping around while trying to sing. DJ gets embarrassed and says "I will never be able to show my face at school again!" Danny agrees not to sing at the fundraiser.

The fundraiser went well as planned and everyone had a good time. At the end of the fund raiser, DJ announces the bands last song and the guest singer, her Dad. Danny sings "My Girl" and didn't embarass DJ at all. It was a happy ending as usual.

While watching the show, I did catch a few commercials that where good examples of weasel words and manipulative advertising. The first one was an ad for Maybelline XXL mascara. It makes your lashes 10% longer. The other commercial was a KFC commercial that was advertising the kids laptop meals. They said that you need a real meal for real fun. I am so convinced that I have to run to KFC after this and get a "real" meal and some 10% longer lashes.

Hanes Her Way/ Weasel Words

I don't entirely understand the "Hanes Her Way" ad. I understand the part about the girl used to wear tiny, sexy underwear and now that they are married she wears white cotton briefs. I don't understand where the man is coming from when he says that he loves to look in the dirty clothes and see her dirty, worn out underwear. I am also sure that if my boyfriend found it comforting to look at my worn out dirty underwear, I would be creeped out. I definately would be a little scared finding out that my underwear reminds him of his mother and his childhood. That would make me want new underwear, not that I would buy Hanes Her Way. I don't think I would be able to look at my boyfriend the same way ever again. I can kind see where the producers of this commercial are going, in that Hanes Her Way are so good that girls don't even want to buy new ones. If that is the case, how do they sell more? After reading about this ad I would definatley not rush out to the store and buy Hanes Her Way underwear.

In response to the "Weasel Words" essay, I never really thought about the words that are considered weasel words. I guess I am one of the consumers that would buy something that says "gets you cleaner", or "10% less fat" not really thinking about what im going to be cleaner than or what I am getting less fat than. Now that I have read this essay, I have realized that almost every advertisement uses weasel words, and almost every consumer thinks that they really are going to get cleaner or better. I never really thought about what the rest of the sentence should be, I just assumed that I would get whatever the product told me. When I am at the store buying something i am usually in such a hurry that when I see bigger or better, I usually just grab it. I think now that I have read weasel words, I will be more careful of what I buy.
