Full House

This week the episode of Full House that I managed to catch was about Jesse trying to make Alex and Nicky look smarter so that they can get into an advanced Kindergarten. He thinks that the only way that the twins will be successful in life is by getting them into the Kindergarten. He lies on the application saying that they are bilingual and that they can read novels. He also says that he is a Doctor to make him look smarter to show that the boys have to be smart. When the twins go to their interview with the head of the school, they just want to play and have no chance of proving what Jesse said was true. The school is confused at first, but then they think that the boys are so smart that they are quiet and don’t like showing their intelligence. When they get home, Rebecca explains to Jesse that lying about the boy’s intelligence level will eventually be revealed and that he should be setting a better example for them other than lying. Jesse agrees that he is wrong and should not force the boys to try harder to be smart. When they get the letter from the school in response to the interview, everyone thought that it would be a denial, but the boys did get into the school. Jesse decides that he would rather have his children go to a regular school instead of forcing them to go to a more advanced school. He learned that you can’t make children smarter by forcing them to learn, all children learn at their own rate; if they are not ready to know something they won’t understand. But when they are ready they will understand, that doesn’t make them any less intelligent.

This weeks readings

The Holy Homosexuality Batman article that we read this week and the class discussion that we had made me laugh. I have never seen any of the Batman movies before but I would have assumed that Batman was a manly hero, not a homosexual. I guess that some of the things Batman and Robin do could possibly put them under suspicion for homosexuality. I don’t honestly think that the writer of Batman would have wanted people to think that Batman was homosexual. I think that a man sitting in another man’s bed rubbing his shoulders is quite abnormal behavior for normal male friends, even brothers don’t normally act as affectionate towards each other as that. I think that walking out of the shower with a towel on is not really abnormal for guys. I would not suspect a man as homosexual if they were getting out of the shower covered by a towel while other men were around. Maybe if he got out of the shower without the towel and Robin was watching very closely, that would be a little suspicious. Although superheroes do wear some super tight clothing that accentuates every single part of them, I don’t think that it is meant to appeal to other men. Tight clothing showing off their muscles just proves how much more powerful and heroic they are than other men. The idea that they didn’t show any part of the woman’s body as oppose to how much of the male body is displayed is kind of confusing other than the point that the superhero is the star and should be getting all the attention, not the human woman.

My Weekend

This weekend was very busy for me. I usually work through the weekend, but I quit one of my jobs to have more time for studying. Working seven days a week and being a full time student just wasn’t for me. On Friday I was enthused about having a day off, but it didn’t really work that way. My grandma moved in with my family, so I had to help pack and move all of her things. After that, my boss needed me to watch his kids for him while he went out and partied on his Friday night, something I haven’t experienced in quite awhile. Babysitting for my boss isn’t too bad because I’m with the kids so much I’m like a big sister to them and he pays well. Although the kids did go to sleep easily for me, which is fairly unusual, the 10 month old kept waking up. His crying would wake up the two year old who then would start crying. When I got the two year old to go back to sleep, I picked up the baby and he puked all over me. I had puke in my hair, all down my shirt, on face, and all over my pants, but don’t worry, none of it got on the baby. This extra money definitely helps to pay the bills. On Saturday, I helped my grandma unpack some of her things and get herself organized. After that I went to the movies and seen The Lookout, which was a pretty good movie. On Sunday, I helped prepare dinner and then ate with the family. After dinner I caught up on all the studying that I didn’t do during the week.

Full House

This week’s episode of Full House was about the girls taking their Father and their Uncles for granted. In the beginning of the show, the girls were going to a theme park and all they say is things like wash my clothes, get the camera, buy us snacks, and pack our things. Then when they are leaving, Danny asks if they were forgetting something and they said, “oh yeah, Money!” They didn’t even say thank you. When they came back the girls told Danny to take them ice skating, Jesse to make them lunch, and Joey to play hide and seek with them.

The guys were realizing that they do everything that the girls tell them to, and they are supposed to be the adults. They decided to switch the roles and have the girls be the parents and the guys are the kids. DJ had to make the lunches and Stephanie had to get their drinks. Joey, Danny, and Jesse continuously changed their minds and complained about everything just as the girls had done to them.

Once the girls realized that the game they were playing was to teach them a lesson, they felt really bad. They learned that their family is not there to serve them; they are there to help them. A family’s life is not meant to revolve around the children’s wishes and commands. Adults should help their children whenever possible, but they should not be expected to drop everything just to do exactly what the kids want. The kids should especially know that they should be appreciative for everything that their parents do for them and show their appreciation by saying thank you.

Full House

This weeks episode of Full House was about Stephanie and DJ's relationship as sisters. They got into an arguement over which one of them could have thier friends over in thier room. Stephanie wanted to have her friends over to play guns and DJ wanted to have her friends over so they could talk about boys. Their father tried to resolve the argument by sending all of their friends home and making the girls stay in their room until they could get along. When Danny came upstairs to see if they were getting along, they faked a hug to get out of their punishment. As soon as Danny left the room they were arguing again. Stephanie decides to leave DJ’s room and move in with Michelle. This does not work either because Michelle just wants to stay up all night and jump on the bed. The family solves this dispute in their made up Tanner court. During the court session Stephanie admits that she is always snooping in DJ’s things because she wants to be just like her. They apologize to each other and end up moving back into the same room together. They realized how important their relationship as sisters to each other is. DJ realizes that Stephanie may be annoying but that she really looks up to her big sister to lead her in the right direction. DJ is happy to be such a role model to her little sister.

Land of the Dead

To no surprise, I have never seen The Land of the Dead. Like every other movie that I have never even heard of. I don't usually like movies that are about zombies or dead people, although I do usually like seeing a good horror film. I think that Land of the Dead was a fairly good movie. It was kind of weird how the movie starts without telling you what is going on, they just suit up and are off to fight the zombies. Usually movies show some sort of backround before jumping in. I also don't understand how if a zombie is dead, how do you get rid of them by killing them? Can't they just become zombies again?

Research papers are not usually the easiest for me; I am much better at forming my opinion with some minor fact thrown in. I have the problem that researching takes time, and I don’t really have any. Looks like I’m going to spend this weekend in front of my computer.

I’m not yet sure of what I am going to write my paper on. Regardless of what topic I choose, there will still be a lot of research that comes along with it. I’m undecided between the race/gender/sexuality/social class, American horror films, (Since I don’t know any, it would be interesting to learn some) and George Romero’s filmography. I don’t know though, don’t be surprised if my paper isn’t written on any of these topics.

Film

I think that rating films like Roger Ebert does are truly awesome. I don’t even have time to watch movies, let alone make time to rate the movies. When I see a movie, as soon as it’s over I think about all the things I need to do or go to work or something like that. I never have time to think about what the moral of the movie is. If I don’t understand a movie, I pretty much consider it a bad movie. I know that this upsets most people but I have a busy lifestyle. I guess I’m not a good moviegoer.

Surprisingly, I did manage to see I, Robot. I thought that it was interesting because of the futuristic angle. I like films that show peoples opinion of the future with such great use of imagination. As Silverman says, “To enjoy this I, Robot, you’ll have to turn off your brain.” I guess I agree with that statement because I enjoyed the movie and I admit that I don’t really try to think to hard about what movies are trying to show me.

After reading this article, I can agree with Silverman that I, Robot does have a lot of loose ends and doesn’t always make sense, but I still think that it was a good movie and like we said in class Will Smith isn’t bad eye-candy.

Full House

This week’s episode of Full House was about everyone depending on Uncle Jesse to do something for them. Michelle needed her Jack in the box fixed, DJ needed him to coach her soccer game, Stephanie needed him to bake cookies for a bake sale, Danny needed him to work on his car, and Joey needed him to help work on the commercial they were making. Jesse was so overwhelmed that he didn't know what to do.

The family decided that they should work together as a family to finish all of the projects that they needed help on. This meant that Uncle Jesse could have a day off and completely to himself. Everyone left his room and went off to work on their projects together. Everyone forgot that Michelle wanted her jack in the box fixed.

Uncle Jesse was relaxing in his room when he noticed that Michelle was looking at her Jack in the box and it wasn’t working. He decided that even on his day off he would try to fix her toy for her. He managed to get it working and Michelle had the biggest smile on her face.

This episode was important because it showed that a family has to work together. One person cannot make a whole family function normally. Everyone needs to help each other with their problems, and not just depend on one person to do everything.

Full House

This week’s episode of Full House started out with Jesse and his band. They were trying to rehearse but the Tanner family had many problems to interrupt them with. First the twins were playing with the drums, and then Danny told Jesse that he has to walk the dog. The band members decided to vote Jesse out of the band.

Jesse was still trying to find a way to perform over the weekend without a band. While he is on the phone with the owner of the club that they are supposed to play at, Michelle asks him to walk Comet, the dog. He tells her to do it herself without really thinking about.

Michelle takes Comet out and he tries to run away. Michelle is not strong enough to hold him back. She called his name and he wouldn’t come back. Michelle is upset and doesn’t know what to do. Stephanie finds her crying on a street corner and asks what happened. Michelle explained the situation, but the two girls really couldn’t do anything about it.

They went home and got there Dad to help them. They went all around the city and didn’t find Comet. Danny yelled at Jesse for letting Michelle walk the dog all by herself because she is too little.

Jesse has a talk with Michelle, apologizing for letting her walk Comet by herself. He explains to her that a good uncle would not have let her put her life in danger walking the dog all by herself. They have a good discussion about thinking of others before yourself. Comet came running into the backyard. Michelle was happy and forgave her Uncle Jesse for what he had done.

Reality TV

I don't really watch reality TV, but I guess I don't really have time to watch TV. So I have never really thought into how reality TV relates to real life. In the reading Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs the author explains how every person that he meets is in one of the seven types that are displayed on MTV's The Real World. I don't really agree with this because I can't think of anyone from the Real World that would relate to me. I'm not gay, I don't start fights at any chance that I get, I'm not crazy, I'm not a sheltered\spoiled brat, I'm not a whore, and I don't always have to have my way. All of those characteristics describe various girls on the Real World and I am not any of those things.

The one thing that I do agree with the author is that the Real World chooses the cast to make seven particular personalities in the house. These personalities are repeated throughout all of the seasons. This kind of takes away a part of reality on the so called reality program.

Full House

This weeks episode of Full House was about revenge. At Stephanie's school, the class bully tells everyone that she likes the new boy. He asks Stephanie out on a date for Friday night and she says yes. Gia, the school bully, is angry at Stephanie and tells her that if she doesn't cancel the date that she will end Stephanie's life. Stephanie decides not to let Gia run her life and does not cancel the date.

The next day, Stephanie walks in to school and everyone laughs at her. When she gets to her locker she sees a sign that says, "Need money? Date Stephanie!". Gia had told the whole school that Stephanie paid her date to go out with her. Stephanie's date decides that he wants to cancel the date because everyone is talking about him.

The next day Stephanie and her friend steel Gia's school record and hang her report card on the wall for everyone to see that she is failing all of her classes. Gia gets really upset, starts crying and leaves. The new boy asks Stephanie if she still wants to go on a date and Stephanie agrees.

Stephanie thinks that she will be happy now that she got revenge and she got the boy, but she isn't. Her Uncle Jesse explains to her that revenge isn't always sweet. Stephanie learned a valuable lesson and apologized to Gia.

Full House

In this episode of Full House it is Michelle's birthday. The Tanner family is having a really big circus party for her. While the family is setting up for the party, Uncle Jesse needs to go to the auto mechanic. He convinces Michelle and Stephanie to go with him so that they are not in the way of everything getting set up. Michelle is slightly skeptical about leaving the house, she does not want to miss her party.

At the auto mechanic's garage, they get the car fixed. Before they leave Uncle Jesse decides that the girls should go the the bathroom before they get in the car to drive home. While in the bathroom, the mechanic shuts and locks all of the doors because he thought that they had left. When they get out of the bathroom they realize that they are locked in. Michelle is really upset that they are going to miss the party.

Uncle Jesse decides that Stephanie and him should put on their own circus act to cheer Michelle up. Jesse is terrified of clowns but still agrees to dress up as one because he wants to make his neice happy. Michelle is very happy that her sister and her uncle put on a show for her.

This episode shows the importance of Michelle's uncle Jesse in her life. Uncle Jesse has been helping to raise Michelle since she was born. Since Michelle does not have a mother, her uncle has been a major importance in her life. Raising a child with just a single parent is very difficult, but Jesse helps to relieve some of the stress from her father by being like a second father to Michelle. He would do practically anything for her, just like a father would.

Full House 4

In this episode of Full House, Stephanie gets asked by a boy on her baseball team to go get some pizza with the team. Kimmie and DJ convince her that he asked her on a date, her first date. Stephanie prepares herself for the date all afternoon. DJ and Steve go to the same pizza place as Stephanie does. Stephanie decides that she would rather sit with DJ and Steve so that she can follow DJ's lead and have the best first date ever. Everything is going horribly.

When they return home, DJ kisses Steve goodnight and Stephanie thinks that she has to kiss her date too. When she kissed him, he said "what was that for?" and wiped it off. Stephanie runs into her room and says that she is never leaving again.

DJ follows her into her room to talk to her. She tells her that it's okay that everything didn't work out well and that she was just rushing things. DJ apologizes for telling Stephanie that it was a date when the boy really just wanted to go out for pizza with the team. DJ explains that Stephanie doesn't need to try to grow up so fast.

DJ's advice to Stephanie is important because Stephanie doesn't have anyone else to talk to about girl problems. Having no mother is hard for young girls, especially when they need motherly advice. DJ tries to help Stephanie like the mother that she does not have.

My experience writing the adobiography

Writing this paper was different than any other paper that I have written. Usually papers that have been assigned to me are research papers or opinion type essays. Writing about my life the way advertisers see me was a little bit challenging. It was hard to find a place to start, but once I got started writing, the paper was not that bad. I thought it was fun to look for the ads, I don't usually have time to look through magazines. I thought that it was fun to relate what advertisers are selling to my actual life. It was awesome to find out that advertisers think that I am fat, ugly, and incapable of singing. Overall, I would much rather write a paper like this one as oppose to boring research papers or any other papers that i have been assigned in the past.

This weeks readings

I thought that the Cool Hunt essay was pretty interesting. I guess that I never thought about how designers knew what was "cool". I never realized that people actually make a job out of following people around and stealing their fashion ideas. I think that it is funny that Reebok changed their DMX RXT shoe from women’s to men’s because of kids on the street who liked it. I guess I have always assumed that producers and designers make products that they think will sell and if they don't, they take them off the market. I guess I was wrong, considering they follow the "cool" people around and take their ideas.

I also liked the interchapter essay on Reading and Writing about Images. It is true that interpreting images is the same as reading a text. I thought that it was cool how they compared the sets of pictures to each other. Looking at just one of the single pictures I probably wouldn't be able to tell so many things about it as when they compare two some what alike pictures. This essay showed an interesting way to see how many different things a picture can say without any words.

Full House 3

The episode of Full House that I managed to catch this week was about Danny becoming the bachelor of the month. Danny is constantly going on dates with women who asked him out only because of his new title. Danny finally lands a date with his talk show host, the one he really wanted to date.

During all of this, Michelle has been getting upset that her Father is never home to put her to bed or spend anytime with her. Her two sisters have been taking the role of Danny in her life. Michelle misses her Dad and will do anything to spend more time with him.

Danny left to go on a date with the co-host of Wake Up San Francisco, and Michelle and her friend climbed into the back seat of the car. When they arrived at the restaurant, Michelle and her friend waited a few minutes and then entered. Michelle spotted her Dad and started waving. Danny's date told him that there was a young woman waving and him and he replied egotistically that there are always women waving at him.

When he realizes that it's his daughter, he runs over to her and asks her why she is there. She told him that she misses him too much when he is always gone on dates. This shows how important relationships between fathers and daughters are. Michelle could not stand being away from her father, her only parent.

Full House Week 2

Full House again, I guess this is going to be my show of choice. There is not much time in my schedule to watch t.v. between being a full time student and working two jobs.
Today's episode was about father daughter relationships, just like the last episode and every other episode of Full House.
The episode started with DJ and Kimmy running in to the Tanner's house. Danny was standing in the kitchen and overheard DJ ask Kimmy what everyone was saying behind her back. Kimmy is hesitant to tell her and makes up a million excuses of what she needs to do instead of talking to DJ. Danny asks DJ if everything is okay and if he can help her with anything, and she said he could help her by leaving her alone.
Kimmy tells her that the mega crisis that is going around was started by Todd Mitchell, a boy at school. He is telling everyone that DJ is the worst kisser in the whole entire school. Danny comes in the room again and tells DJ that he is always there for her. Danny leaves the room after being rejected by his daughter yet again. DJ asks more about the crisis and Kimmy tells her that everyone knows about it, including their algebra teacher.
Kimmy and DJ leave the Tanner's house to go next door to Kimmy's house. Danny goes into DJ's room and finds the card that DJ was given that said sorry about your mega crisis from a girl at school.
Dj comes home and again is asked by her father if everything is okay. She responds that she is fine and didn't want to talk. Danny suggests that they go bowling. During bowling Kimmy arrives and tells DJ that they need to go to the mall to confront Todd Mitchell. When DJ gets home Danny tells her that he went snooping in her room and found the card. DJ is mad but explains everything when she realizes that her Dad is only there to help, not just to invade her privacy.

BROUGHT TO YOU B(U)Y

In response to the analysis of the Calvin Klein ads, I think that people are thinking way to far into the whole child exploitation idea. I don't think that Calvin Klein intended on the ad to be perceived as childhood pornography. I think he, like most other advertisers, was using the idea that sex and sex appeal sells. Almost all clothing advertisements use some sort of sex appeal. I think that by people protesting Calvin Klein because of his ad, he received more publication and free advertisement. All though many people wouldn't buy the products, everyone still remembers the name Calvin Klein and the ads that Calvin Klein published.

I also think that the ads that say they have a medical reason why you should buy their product are stupid. I don't know about anyone else, but when an ad tells me that I will be less likely to get cancer if I use some product, I usually won't be anymore influenced to buy them. You can catch cancer by breathing in the air or by being born into a family that has members with cancer. I don't understand why almost every food product on the market reduces your chance of cancer and millions of people get cancer every year. If all I had to do was eat a bowl of Kellogs All Bran cereal everyday to prevent me from getting cancer, I would do it. I think almost anyone would. I also think that any advertisement that says four out of five doctors chose thier product are very misleading. I'm sure that most people who buy the products in those ads expect that the doctors would be real doctors in that field. Most times the doctor will be either a student or a doctor in an unrelated field. I personally think that advertisements that don't tell the whole truth are far worse than a girl and a guy laying together half naked, even if they are only fourteen.

Full House

This week I watched an old rerun episode of Full House, not necessarily my show of choice, but hey it's on every hour. This episode was about DJ trying to arrange a fund raiser to raise money for her school to buy a new computer to publish their newspaper. DJ is able to hold the fund raiser at The Smash Club, her Uncle Jesse's night club. Her Uncle Joey is the comedy act and her Uncle Jesse's band plays during the fundraiser. Danny, DJ's father, gets upset that he is left out of all the plans. He decides that he is going to surprise DJ and sing a song with the band. While he is rehearsing "My Generation" by The Who's, DJ comes home and sees him. Danny is dressed in an all leather suit and jumping around while trying to sing. DJ gets embarrassed and says "I will never be able to show my face at school again!" Danny agrees not to sing at the fundraiser.

The fundraiser went well as planned and everyone had a good time. At the end of the fund raiser, DJ announces the bands last song and the guest singer, her Dad. Danny sings "My Girl" and didn't embarass DJ at all. It was a happy ending as usual.

While watching the show, I did catch a few commercials that where good examples of weasel words and manipulative advertising. The first one was an ad for Maybelline XXL mascara. It makes your lashes 10% longer. The other commercial was a KFC commercial that was advertising the kids laptop meals. They said that you need a real meal for real fun. I am so convinced that I have to run to KFC after this and get a "real" meal and some 10% longer lashes.

Hanes Her Way/ Weasel Words

I don't entirely understand the "Hanes Her Way" ad. I understand the part about the girl used to wear tiny, sexy underwear and now that they are married she wears white cotton briefs. I don't understand where the man is coming from when he says that he loves to look in the dirty clothes and see her dirty, worn out underwear. I am also sure that if my boyfriend found it comforting to look at my worn out dirty underwear, I would be creeped out. I definately would be a little scared finding out that my underwear reminds him of his mother and his childhood. That would make me want new underwear, not that I would buy Hanes Her Way. I don't think I would be able to look at my boyfriend the same way ever again. I can kind see where the producers of this commercial are going, in that Hanes Her Way are so good that girls don't even want to buy new ones. If that is the case, how do they sell more? After reading about this ad I would definatley not rush out to the store and buy Hanes Her Way underwear.

In response to the "Weasel Words" essay, I never really thought about the words that are considered weasel words. I guess I am one of the consumers that would buy something that says "gets you cleaner", or "10% less fat" not really thinking about what im going to be cleaner than or what I am getting less fat than. Now that I have read this essay, I have realized that almost every advertisement uses weasel words, and almost every consumer thinks that they really are going to get cleaner or better. I never really thought about what the rest of the sentence should be, I just assumed that I would get whatever the product told me. When I am at the store buying something i am usually in such a hurry that when I see bigger or better, I usually just grab it. I think now that I have read weasel words, I will be more careful of what I buy.
